Photography has been my passion since I was a teenager. I began with a Kodak Instamatic camera and made random pictures of shadows and goats and my family sleeping.
Discovering photographers such as William Eggleston, Alec Soth, Sally Mann (among many) and more recently Stephen Gill, opened up a whole new exciting world to me.
However, it was my family's old slide films and tiny black-and-white photos that had the most significant impact, and likely what gives much of my work its nostalgic feel.
I have always taken portraits of friends and family, but I am also fascinated by daily life. Themes like home life, plants, and window views often appear in my work and continue to be explored.
Photography helps me remember and understand the life I'm in; it slows me down so I'm paying attention, and it makes me appreciate what's in front of me. I focus on light, colour, and familiarity or the overlooked, to evoke a connection and response from my images.
It's a mix of taking control but also letting go.
I am excited to be part of the group show, THE MIXTAPE Summer 2024 exhibition, at The Vanner Gallery in Salisbury. Running from August 16th to September 14th, the exhibition features painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and photography.
I will be exhibiting two photographs and would love for you to come along and take a look.
